Saturday 26th September v Vale of White Horse
by The Assist
Gloucester's two district sides completed a double at Westminster College to see off Vale of White Horse in their second outings of the season. The city B Squad began proceedings and were the dominant side before the break, even though the first period ended goaless. Keeper Sargent, who had enjoyed a fine debut the previous Saturday was rarely troubled, though his opposite number Whitehead had to be on his mettle to deny both Dada-Grieve and Hayes in one-on-one situations as Gloucester looked for the opener. It was Dada-Grieve however who gave Gloucester the lead following a right wing cross from Simmonds as the visitors continued to dominate. Webb added the second after good work from skipper Deegan Hayes, before Matthew Hayes completed the scoring to wrap up his side's first victory of the campaign. Gloucester B: Sargent; E.Stock, Robbie, Wood, Thompson; Staddon, M.Hayes, D.Hayes, Simmonds; Dada-Grieve, Dodd. Subs: Webb, Carr. Gloucester's A Squad began well, taking the lead against their Vale counterparts in only the third minute, Bird's lay-back being converted by Walker. Assheton then saw his effort following Sutherland's pass well saved by Reeves, but following the resulting corner, Nutting added the second. Vale responded well and twice Welch had to be quick off his line to deny a strike on goal and when the keeper was beaten from a free kick, Goode was on hand to clear off the line. Stock performed well on the right for Gloucester while Ashman, Goode and Vallender each looked solid as they denied the hosts any further first half opportunities. Nutting fired a free kick just over at the other end before Bird claimed Gloucester's third following good work from Nutting and Sutherland shortly before the break. Defensive slackness allowed Nadin to reduce the arrears just after the interval, but Sutherland sent Bird clear to finish clinically. Again the hosts came back, Hartley converting a loose ball in the Gloucester box, but the city side continued to look dangerous and after firing just wide, Walker profited from another Bird lay-off to strike number five from just outside the box. Welch saved from Stemp prior to Field's speculative effort finding the net, but too opportunist finishes from Wilkinson following assists from Walker and Vallender ended Vale's resistance and completed a fine victory. Gloucester: Welch; C.Stock, Ashman, Hawkins, Goode, Sutherland; Walker, Nutting, Wilkinson; Assheton, Bird. Subs: Vallender, Jones.
